If you have chipped or cracked a tooth, you may feel self-conscious as you smile or laugh. In fact, as you review family photographs, you may notice that your lips remain closed in each picture.
Still, a damaged tooth can easily be corrected using cosmetic dental applications. Here are a few dental services that can conceal a crack or chip in a tooth.
Crowns
Surrounding the natural tooth, a dental crown can be used for fortification and restoration. During the application, the dentist removes a bit of tooth enamel and makes a mold of the patient's mouth. A dental lab uses the mold to create a customized crown that the dentist bonds into place to permanently conceal the crack or chip.
Bonding
Dental bonding uses a composite resin material to fill in the missing area of a tooth. During the application, the tooth with the crack or chip is smoothed to remove any rough areas. The dentist then applies an acidic solution to the tooth's enamel to etch the surface so the bonding material can adhere properly.
Once the tooth is prepared, the dentist adds the resin to the tooth, molding it into place. The material is then hardened by a special curing light. The dentist then polishes the tooth to help the bonding material blend seamlessly with the natural tooth material.
Veneers
Dental veneers can also be used to correct a dental chip or crack. A veneer is custom-fabricated to match the contours of the patient's mouth and fit precisely over the desired tooth.
Each veneer is a thin shell of porcelain that is applied to the front of the damaged tooth to conceal its flaws. The veneer is permanently bonded into place, so the patient's dental improvements may last a lifetime.
Prior to the placement of a veneer, the tooth is prepared by the removal of a small amount of tooth enamel. This enamel removal is needed to allow the veneer to fit flush with the front surfaces of the other teeth in the palate.
After the tooth is prepared, an impression of the mouth is created and sent to a dental laboratory. There, the mold is used to create the veneer. Once the veneer is ready, it is sent to the dental office. During a subsequent visit, the dentist affixes your veneer in position, adjusting it as necessary for maximum comfort and aesthetic appeal.
