Use of Implants Is Mostly Safe
The use of implants is generally considered safe by dentists. Dental implants have had a high degree of success, and there are plenty of patients who've comfortably had implants for the rest of their lives. One of the ways in which dentists ensure implants are safe is by performing thorough checks on their patients before deciding if they'll be a good match for the procedure. Patients with sensitivity to certain metals that are alloyed with titanium usually don't get implants because of this.
Dental Implant Risks
As stated early, implants are mostly considered safe, and the procedure has a high success rate. However, there are still a few risks that a patient may face after getting implants.
For starters, the titanium may start to corrode if exposed to conditions that are extremely acidic. Inflammation is one of the issues that can create extremely acidic conditions. These acidic conditions can also cause a reaction between the titanium and other metals. This has to be factored in if you have fillings.
If the implant site did not properly heal after the tooth was extracted, an infection might occur as well.
Making Implants Safer
Dentists are well aware of the issues that are likely to make the use of implants unsafe for any patient. To make the procedure safer, dentists try and make the screening process as thorough as possible. This enables them to identify patients who are likely to experience complications if they get implants.
For example, smokers, heavy drug users, diabetics, and people with cancer may not make good candidates for implants. These conditions make it harder for the body to heal after the surgery. Dentists will also schedule a lot of regular checkups after the procedure.
